This is the line at the government office, well not exactly...

Typical traffic in Shanghai, a mix of crazy bikers, horrible drivers, and me!
A reference to a great song, and a sarcastic ode to an awesome day. I think this day is worth blogging about because it portrays many of the things that describe life in China for me right now. Where to start?
Walked outside this morning, blinded by a bright light...it took me a few seconds to realize that I had not seen blue skies and my old yellow friend for a couple weeks! Many of you know I like to keep the leathery tan of a golf pro, so you can imagine how hard this is for me.
Came to work, dodging bicycles all the way...had an uneventful morning until I left at lunch to go renew my visa at the government entry/exit building. My company had hired a person to go reserve an appointment for me, and I was scheduled to meet her at 1:30. Of course, traffic was horrible and I couldn't get there until 1:40, so I was sweating in the back of the taxi the whole way across the river (25 minute drive, 2 hrs in heavy traffic), thinking about how the chinese government would react to a handsome American stiffing them on an appointment. Luckily, the girl who we hired literally just gets a number like we would in the BMV/DMV in the US. I had hired help to get a number in line (she came 2.5 hrs early)...only in China.
Upon arriving, I had no idea who this girl would be, so I walked around asking people if they were waiting to meet someone. This is my worst nightmare, being a closet-shy person. Finally, I found her, and had an awesome awkward conversation for 45 minutes while we waited for my number to be called. We chatted with some govt people, and I got a visa that is good until the end of the year! Score, now I don't have to find a job in Indy for a few weeks longer.
On the cab ride home, the driver took me all over the damn place (2 X the cost of the ride out there). I think he had no idea how to find my hotel, and was just driving around. There is ZERO chance of being able to communicate, and ZERO chance of me navigating the city alone if I get out, so I just sat in the back watching a Chinese cartoon on the TV in the car. I was distracted by a bus that kept honking at us and nearly hitting us as we weaved into his lane, and suddenly we smashed into the back of another car! We didn't do much damage but certainly I was on edge for the rest of the ride. The driver gets out, argues with the other driver (probably saying, "I was trying to help you save gas by pushing you across the bridge! You should be paying me for the reduced petrol expenses!"). Anyways, we get the matter settled and he rode me around aimlessly for another 20 minutes before finally dropping me off.
At this point, it is pouring rain. It does this every day here (I can confirm only 1 day it has NOT rained since I arrived like 15 days ago). I had left my umbrella at the aptmt because of the sunshine, so I'm getting soaked. I'm back at work by 4, waiting for a 7pm conference call which will prevent me from getting dinner with the Taylor's...looks like another night of slim fast and Boston Legal!!! This is the 3rd night this week I've been at the office until 8:30, which blows. Actually, I wouldn't mind working hard except that from 9-5 I just email, blog, and read news sites because I have nothing to do!!!
Anyways, some days are so bad that they are good, you know? You get to a certain point that you just have to laugh about the things you cannot control, and be happy that most days are not this day...
This is my life.
